HangNailz™ Don'ts (and how to get the best results instead)

At HangNailz, we’ve made it our mission to make wall hanging easier, faster, and less stressful. But even with our tool-free, easy-to-install products, there are a few things we recommend you don’t do.

Here’s our quick and honest list of what not to do with HangNailz products, plus tips for getting the best results.

  1. Don’t skip the instructions.

Yes, we know—real DIYers don’t read directions. But just because our products push in by hand doesn’t mean they’re foolproof. So make your work look professional and give the directions a go.

Or if you’re a visual learner: Check out our short how-to videos or quick-start guides.

  2. Don’t force HangNailz products into brick, tile, or plaster.

HangNailz products are made for drywall only. Many U.S. homes built after 1980 were built with drywall, but there are exceptions.

  3. Don’t install HangNailz products single-handedly.

Don’t attempt to install HangNailz with only one hand.

    Instead:
Use both thumbs on each side of the Push`ums hook, or both hands on each side of the frame when using our Stick`ums.

  4. Don’t hang more than the weight limit.

HangNailz anchors are engineered for strength, but every product has its limits. Exceeding them puts your wall, your decor, and your safety at risk.

Instead: Respect the specified weight limits:

Stick`ums: Up to 5 lbs per Stick`um with adhesive only, or up to 35 lbs each with the screw-in method.

Push`ums: Up to 25 lbs per hook.

Always confirm the weight of the item you’re hanging before installation.

  5. Don’t bend the prong during installation.

HangNailz anchors use precision-engineered V-Barb prongs to grip the drywall from behind. If you bend the prong while pushing it in, you compromise its hold and stability.

Instead: Apply steady, even pressure straight into the wall—don’t force it at an angle. Let the prong do the work, and it will anchor securely with minimal damage.

  6. Don’t install HangNailz into the same hole twice.

HangNailz anchors rely on a tight, undisturbed grip with the drywall. Reusing the same hole compromises the integrity of the drywall, making it far more likely to slip or pull out over time.

Instead: Always install HangNailz into fresh drywall. If you need to reposition, just move your mark slightly to its new position. The V•Barb needs solid material to lock into, and clean drywall gives you the strongest, most secure hold.

Don't make these common mistakes while using Stick`ums:

  7. Don’t forget to clean the flat surface of the Stick`um, as well as the surface of your frame before adhering.

Stick`ums are manufactured with a light anti-corrosion coating which can interfere with adhesion if not removed.

  8. Don’t use the provided high-bond adhesive strips alone when hanging heavy objects.

Each Stick`um holds 5 lbs with the adhesive pad alone—but if you’re mounting something hefty like a framed mirror, don’t rely on just the sticky part.

Instead: Use the optional screw-in method to hold up to 35 lbs each securely.

PRO TIP: Warm the strip with a hairdryer (high heat) for 15 seconds on each side before applying it. The heat will activate the adhesive for an even better bond. Once cool, your items are ready to go.

  9. Don’t apply Stick`ums to the backing of artwork.

Stick`ums are not meant to stick to cardboard backings, paper prints, or glass. That kind of surface won’t hold weight and can cause damage or even injury when pressing into the wall.

Instead: Always adhere Stick`ums directly to the frame—specifically in the upper right and left corners. The frame provides the strength and structure needed to then press into the wall.

  10. Don’t grab the spackle—you won’t need it!

Removing traditional wall anchors usually means patching and repainting. Not with HangNailz. Our anchors are designed to leave behind only a thin slice in the drywall—no crumbling, no gaping holes.
Instead: After removal, simply flatten the area with your finger and touch up with a dab of paint if needed. That’s it. Spackle stays in the drawer.
